New Handbags for 2015 Signature Collection

There’s a whole lot happening at KristyBag! We have some NEW handbag styles added to our trend setting handbag line for 2015.  Please help us welcome the first new addition to The Kristy Bag by CG Signature Collection for 2015- the lovely “elizabeth”.

The “elizabeth” is a box wristlet. This handbag is made from veg tanned leather that was hand-stained with a dark brown highlighting color then quickly removed. The stain remains in the tiny leather pores giving it a very rich patina.

It’s hand-stitched with white thread and the client’s hardware selection is brushed nickel. A bold black zipper was chosen for impact.

Handbag designer Kristy Lash added a tab at the end of the zipper that snaps closed for another interesting design detail. It adds interest to this new stylish handbag design.

“elizabeth” is a classy head-turning handbag that is full of detail giving it an exciting look. The trend setting eye glass sling was designed on this compact handbag which adds a beautiful detail to the front as you show off those designer shades. The handbag is fully lined with our pigskin Lining a la Lash affording it a luxurious feel when reaching inside.

Trend setting eye glass sling is added to the front of the new “elizabeth” Box Wristlet.

A deep back pocket adds even more roominess to this take-anywhere handbag.

Trend setting handbag major fashion impact Handbag design The Kristy Bag by CG Crabtree Gardens Hand Dyed Leather Since this was a Signature handbag in our collection, the person who purchased the first one of it’s style was given the opportunity to name the bag. They also got their signature hand-tooled on the bag.  There are 6 styles of handbags that are the Namesake Signature handbags. The handbags are named as such: Kristy-tote, Angela-Satchel, Cheri-Crossbody, Sue-Clutch and Ivanna-Wristlet. Each original handbag has that owner’s signature/name hand-tooled onto their handbags. As a high-end handbag maker, it’s the attention to details such as this that sets our handbags apart. Other handbags ordered in these styles do not have a name tooled on them but they will each be one-of-a-kind.

Trend setting handbag elizabeth box wristlet new Handbag design The Kristy Bag by CG Crabtree Gardens Hand Dyed Leather Signature handbagWe will be adding “elizabeth” to our current price list in Natural for $225 and colors at $265. All of Kristy Bag colored bags are hand-dyed which lends a much richer layered quality of color and higher degree of craftsmanship to the handbag that just doesn’t happen with a chemically-dyed hide. You won’t see someone else with the same handbag as you, that’s a promise!

We are also going to give a little teaser here about one of 4 new colors that we will be unveiling for Fall 2015. Here’s a little peek at “Goldenrod”.

“Goldenrod” is the newest of four handbag colors for Fall 2015 shown with snow, black and espresso stitching tread.

Can you visualize this rich, warm color on your own “elizabeth” Box Wristlet? Or maybe even a “Goldenrod” Satchel. Kristy and I surely can! We are both picturing it with either espresso or black stitching for a major fashion impact!

Our promise is to continue to set trends in handbag design with new colors, styles and wearable innovations.

Bearing or Baring it All

Today, is Fat Tuesday which ends the Mardi Gras celebration.  Known as the greatest “free show” on earth, at Mardi Gras the custom of receiving a strand of beads prompts women to unabashedly bear (bare?) their breasts. We are all about a good party here at KristyBag but we do need to keep our sense of decorum. However, we would still like to have some fun and “bear” it all.

And we are doing just that with our bear friend, Rosa! She’s holding a very special prototype of an accessory that we will be offering in the future. There are only snippets shown of the item, since we just can’t give it all way now. It is going to be another trend setting item in our KBCG 2015 Handbag Collection.

Trend setting handbag detail and color trend setting handbag accessory The Kristy Bag by CG Crabtree Gardens New handbag color 2015

We chose to use a brand new handbag color on this prototype. So, we need to come up with a name for it. It matches the lighter tips of Rosa’s fur. It’s not really a rose color and yet the word pink doesn’t completely cover it either.

Trend setting handbag detail and color trend setting handbag accessory The Kristy Bag by CG Crabtree Gardens New handbag color 2015 2

Here’s a better close up view of the color (left) that needs a great name. You can see how it shows next to the new 2015 Silver Dollar color we just announced.

And as far as that teaser accessory bag, check out the interesting detail that we’ve added to it. Soft black leather has been shirred into a ruffle-like detail. It’s completely hand-stitched too! It peeks out adding a very risque effect. I’m calling our new soft, frilly leather ruffle-Handbag Lingerie. A perfect name for this exciting handbag detail. Remember you heard it here first!

It’s almost like the lace ruffle on a panty edge just adding a bit of “ooh-la-la” to it. That phrase also describes how you’ll feel after slipping your hand into one of our larger trend setting handbags that bear the glorious Lining a-la Lash 😉

The soft black leather used for shirring is not like our standard leather, it’s actually garment leather left from a private commission. It fits the look we are headed for so we’ve decided to use it in this application, since this particular trendy accessory will be made in a limited number and available at our Oh So Special Handbag Event in June.

Sometimes this new color takes on really faint lavender undertone as can be seen by the lavender tinted cordial glass.

We can’t wait to reveal what we are going to call this particular accessory. It will make some of you blush for sure!

But our main purpose it to find a perfect name for this pretty, pinkish shade. The new yet-to-be-named handbag color has the shimmer and softness of the center of a rose petal. It’s so dainty.

There’s also a “private” agenda here and we would so appreciate any help that you can give us. The beautiful furry pink handmade teddy bear “Rosa” belongs to Kristy Lash. It was gifted to her when she was about 10 years old. When Dave and I helped Kristy move back to the area I first saw Rosa in Kristy’s handbag room. I fell in love with her color. Kristy told me that I could keep Rosa until she moved into another home. So I’ve been taking care of Rosa for about a year and she will be going to live in a new home with Kristy in another few weeks.  (Rosa will still come here for sleep-overs whenever she wants.)

We would love to know who actually made Rosa. All that Kristy knows is that she was purchased in Virginia around 1993. If any of our followers out there knows of a bear maker in VA, please send us a message or email so that we can find Rosa’s maker. We would appreciate it more than you know 😉

Rosa has marking SY ’93 on her back tag.

Most importantly, we would love to hear those suggestions for the new color name for this new soft and pretty color that we are adding to our handbag color selector for 2015. The color name should be two words such as our “Hottie Pink” and “Silver Dollar”.  Please either comment here or on The Kristy Bag by CG Facebook Page. There might be a little surprise for the best name!

Lucky Friday the 13th

We have the NEW color name so it’s a LUCKY Friday the 13th! Thank goodness there’s not a full moon!  There is a little bit of silver involved here, but it’s not a bullet for the werewolf, it’s the NEW COLOR NAME! A few posts back we offered a challenge for our followers.

New color handbag heart hangs from a champagne flute filled with silver, pearl and tan shreds which give hints to the new color name.

We came up with a really good color and needed a name for it. Today is the day we announce the new color name and give away a little token of appreciation to the LUCKY person who named it for us!

For those who can’t wait… The winner is- SILVER  DOLLAR!!!

The Kristy Bag by CG presents the new handbag color for 2015-Silver Dollar

For those who want to know more read on it’s pretty amazing!

The color swatch that we posted previously in the Name that Color post was placed against objects that had colors resembling the swatch. After sharing the request for color names on our social media sites, we were overwhelmed with numerous names that would have worked. We determined the winning name from a post on Crabtree Gardens, LLC Facebook page. That name was SILVER DOLLAR. The person who suggested the name gave her reasons why-Silver Dollar (after the plant which addresses all the criteria as described in the pictures)and she is exactly right!    Congratulations to the lucky winner, we won’t post your name here unless you want us to! We will reply to your Facebook post. We would like to give you a little gift for choosing the name that we felt best described this color.

Trend setting new handbag color Silver Dollar The Kristy Bag by CG Crabtree Gardens Garden inspired color American made leather handbags

Leather Handbag Heart Key chain wears “Silver Dollar” and “Snow” thread and is accessorized in brass hardware.

The reason we chose this name for our new color is because it relates to the garden and nature. In the Facebook post, I mentioned coming up with a “gardenesque” name. “Silver dollar” is the common name for the dried seed pod from Lunaria annua, a flowering plant known as “money plant” or “honesty”.  When the seed pods dry they have a round disc-like shape and they are luminescent and sheer. By the way, the meaning of the Latin word lunaria is “moon”. These seed pods have a silvery-shimmer and can also look a little pearly. The tawny colored seeds can be seen inside of these “silver dollars”.  It was the perfect name for the new color of our leather since the natural warmth still comes through the metallic sheen. Both Kristy and I adore these dried silver dollars in vases.

This photo taken at Crabtree Gardens, LLC in Drums, PA shows the dried seed pods backlit by sunlight which illuminates a few small seeds still remaining inside the papery pods. The new Kristy Bag handbag color for 2015, “Silver Dollar” was chosen for its resemblance to these dried seed pods of Lunaria annua commonly known as “silver dollar”, “money plant” and “honesty”.

We are absolutely in love with this color and cannot wait to make up a group of bags using it!

Man Bag

This morning the universe sent something great our way! I’ve been meaning to get Dave’s surprise man bag post out there but I’ve be so busy working on the new color announcement that I forgot all about it. Poor Dave! While reading our local newspaper, he found this awesome comic strip by Baby Blues and cut it out for me. We LOVE it! I think it’s a big hint to get his story out there!

So I left you all hanging on the morning when we were going to surprise Dave with his man bag. We had a road trip planned and when Kristy arrived here we presented Dave with his much coveted bag.  Here’s a candid photo of the look on his face as he couldn’t quite figure out what was happening.

He gave us each a big hug while he was still kind of confused as to how we did it without his knowledge. We actually hijacked some of the leather, and did the cutting, dyeing, punching and stitching when he wasn’t around. It was pretty hysterical when he unrolled a hide during the time we were still working on his secret bag and he just couldn’t figure out where the leather went. Kristy and I were trying to keep our composure and not burst out laughing. The look on his face was priceless when he saw it missing and didn’t remember doing it. 🙂

A hand-dyed trend setting “Tumbled Pokeberry” Crossbody makes a perfect masculine bag as held by its owner, Dave Crabtree, leather artisan and part of The Kristy Bag by CG team.

Kristy and I decided to leave the side hardware and front clasp for Dave to apply to the handbag since he is the one who usually attaches it. We presented him with the body of the handbag and the hole-punched straps which we thought looked amazing without stitches! He loved the look too. Who knows, this could be another one of our future trend setting ideas for handbag design! When the bag is completely assembled, we will get a few photos out there for you all to see.  Here’s what it looks like now. Don’t you just love that trend setting eye wear sling ? Dave will have his shades hung on there as soon as he starts using it!

Kristy designed a nice pen holder pocket in the lining in addition to the regular sized pocket. Dave loves pens so he was very pleased with this addition.

A pen holder pocket and standard pocket were hand-stitched inside the lining of the man’s crossbody. Side hardware has yet to be attached to the handbag.

The bottom line is that he LOVES this bag! He can’t get over how soft and supple it is and he’s just thrilled that it belongs to him.

We have SO much more coming up, it’s actually hard to keep up with! We will be announcing the new color name and the winner of the surprise gift for naming it. Kristy is working on some bags with the new color so as soon as they are stitched, we will post the GOODNESS!

Thanks for sharing our blog posts and getting our journey out there. We appreciate your comments on our Facebook page too!

Happy Birthday Handbag Hottie!

It’s the Handbag Hottie’s birthday today!  Happy Birthday Kristy Lash! This post is ALL ABOUT YOU! Here’s a little photo montage of your past few months here in Handbag Happyland 🙂

You started the journey with a trendsetting handbag in the late summer of 2014. This is when we began to photo journal. Handbag Hottie in Handbag Happyland Crabtree Gardens

Then you went on and created the Bagette and “Ivanna” wristlet. Remember how happy we all were with this photo? Here’s where we started to have some fun with staging your “shoots”.

How could we forget Lumber Jill? She really began the Handbag Hottie fame! You wore those goggles so proudly and wielded that chainsaw like a pro!

Handbag Hottie 1

That’s the day you completed the “Angela” Satchel, the next large trend setting handbag in the KristyBag collection. We were so proud!

Handbag Hottie2The Lumber Jill shoot made us think really hard and then we came up with the hunter-teaser with deer antlers and you dressed like a HOTTIE! Those boots are soooooo…stiletto 😉 Remember how your heels kept sinking into the ground?

Handbag Hottie dressed in leatherThen that led us to the turkey blog that there was SO much controversy over. Remember how we clipped those leather hides to you with binder clips and how everyone was asking if the turkey was trained?

Handbag Hottie 3You were always willing to do whatever crazy scheme we came up with and we all had so much fun in the process! Remember this cold quick one? I told you to look like you were warm and toasty. Hehe!

Handbag Hottie 4

Our big Christmas Open House came around and you were proud to pose behind the five trend setting handbags that you designed. It was a fabulous photo by our friend Robert!

Then, along came “Sue”, the clutch that you coveted and the trend setting handbag that completed the 2014 Kristy Bag collection. We have such big future-post announcement plans for “Sue”, she’s going to be the one that lets everyone know the name that we chose for the NEW COLOR that we’ve been working on naming! As a matter of fact, she’s getting dyed today, on your birthday- February 8, and she’s going to be your clutch!

Handbag Hottie6We celebrated the namesake “Sue’s completion with some bubbly, after all, Sue B. would expect nothing less.

Then as the holidays rolled in, you were asked to play an elf-baker making handbag cookies. Remember how we tied the tiny strip of henna crossbody strap to your waist with string so it would look like a belt? You posed-it-proud!

The Handbag Hottie1At The Lil Yoga Barn, we asked you to hold all of the larger handbags while in Warrior Two pose as we kept trying to get that perfect shot. I forgot to empty out my satchel and the weight was breaking your arm. I know you must remember that!

Handbag Hottie1 PosingThen finally the shoot we waited for- Kristy Kringle! Remember how you were delayed because of a traffic accident and the later evening light was just perfect for our night photos?  How ingenious that you came up with a tree skirt for an outfit! We were really keyed up that night. The photo even made it to a calendar-now you are a Calender Girl too!!!!

A Real Handbag Hottie and Calendar GirlYou were such a trooper when you stabbed yourself with a needle and Dave bandaged it for you and gave you a Cranberry Mink cocktail to take your mind off the pain LOL!

Original Handbag Hottie1You then lounged around on the sofa near the fireplace wearing your penguin socks after you completed the namesake satchel for Angela. It was very interesting finding needles on the floor after you left 😉

Handbag Hottie Kristy Lash with Trend Setting Handbag SatchelThe news-making Snowga event at the Lil Yoga Barn took our attention that day so you had to try and upstage it with Dancer Pose while doing Yo-bag-a as you worked on the commissioned “Deep” color satchel that you wanted to keep. Wow! I didn’t know that you were that limber!

It was just your gel-coated finger nail-polished hands holding Hottie Pink and Spicy accessories along with your polished toes peeking out of those amazing wedges but it got so many shares!

Leather-Lust and Colour-Intrigue

The Kristy Bag by CG Custom made American Leather Handbags using hide blemishes and range marks

Commissioned “Angela” Satchel dyed color “Deep” accenting all cowhide range marks that remained on the hide.

Our handbag journey is a fascinating experience. It reminds me of the Downton Abbey series but lacks the European accent so to speak. It is filled with leather-lust and colour-intrigue. When we brought a new tannage into our workshop, it created a stirring effect .

If you harken back in time to ( previous post ), we accepted a commission for the “Angela” Satchel dyed the color “Deep”. It was exciting for us because most of the dye colors were used on smaller pieces like wristlets and bagettes which quickly sold. We really hoped for a large bag commissioned in a color.

The Kristy Bag by CG Trend Setting Handbags Dying Veg Tanned Leather1

“Ivanna” wristlet made using standard leather dyed color “Deep”.

As I expressed in the last post, we just didn’t have time to make up bags for display in the natural color let alone use any of the other six colors that we offer. Kristy had really been lusting after a “Deep” colored handbag for her own personal use.  So, a few months ago, we decided to test the color “Deep” on a wristlet that was made from a new prototype leather we began to use, which is a different tannage and much softer than our standard leathers.

Trend setting handbag The Kristy Bag by CG Wristlet Kristy Lash artist American made leather handbag veg tanned leather handmade tumbled pokeberry 1

Handbag Hottie Kristy Lash shows off her new “Tumbled Pokeberry” wristlet with some unique hardware.

An intriguing thing happened when I started to prepare the wristlet for the dye. When I applied water to the leather surface to open the grain so that the dye would penetrate the hide, the water seemed to sit on top of the surface leaving a very mottled effect. It did eventually penetrate but very sporadically. I then applied the dye and was shocked at what happened. It reminded me of dying Easter eggs when adding oil to the egg dye. It took on a very wild and crazy look of pure purple mayhem! Eventually the dye penetrated but it still remained very mottled. Not something that we were expecting.

A section of a new handbag is dyed with the color “Deep” which is applied to a special tannage of leather that causes the color to very slowly penetrate the surface when first applied. Note the hide brand “A3” that is apparent on the leather. At right is another piece that has been dyed using the same color but has been allowed to dry completely (Tumbled Pokeberry).

I gave it several more coats of dye thinking it would even-out the look but it still remained mottled. The final result became known as our “Tumbled Pokeberry”.

Why did we call it that color name? We used the word “Tumbled” so that we could distinguish the tannage with the high oil content. The word “Pokeberry” was chosen for the color of crushed berries from the Pokeweed plant (Phytolacca americana) which appear on an earlier photo of our colorways along with a grouping of other dark plants surrounding our swatch of leather dyed “Deep”. I love the botanical name of that plant. When we say we have handbags that are garden inspired, it’s really true. And the fact that we are an American-made leather handbag company makes it even better 😉

Trend setting handbags The Kristy Bag by CG Crabtree Gardens color deep leather garden inspired handbag colors veg tanned leather American made handbags

At left, an area of crushed pokeberries shows the vibrant purple color that resembles the color of our “Deep” dye on leather tannage that has a high oil content in the hide.

Handbag confetti*  “Tannage” is the act or process of tanning animal hides. Each tannery has their own method. Our handbags are made from 3 different tannages of naked veg tanned leather. We choose the proper tannage for the handbag that we are making. Some handbags such as the satchel require a stiffer leather and others like the crossbody and wristlet work better with a softer tannage.

Dave explained that this particular tannage process allowed more oils to remain near the surface of the hide therefore creating the unique way water and dye penetrated the surface. The mystery was solved. We all love this particular look called “Tumbled Pokeberry” (“Deep” color dye applied to our prototype leather).

“Depth must be hidden. Where? On the surface.”

That’s enough for now, but there will be much, much more in-store!  Next post up- read about how Kristy and I hijack leather from Dave’s stash, cut it, dye it, punch it and stitch it in order to present Dave with a surprise “Tumbled Pokeberry” Crossbody Man Bag that he has lusted after since he first tried Kristy’s “Natural” prototype. We plan to give it to him later this morning Feb. 5th, before we head out on another road trip to our favorite restaurant The Alpine Wurst and Meat House. Now I just have to keep him from seeing this post until then. Can you imagine his surprise when he sees it and learns that it belongs to him?
