You’ve heard of an eyeglass case and even maybe a special place for eyeglasses to be stored inside a handbag side pocket, but have your ever heard of a handbag glass sling?  Handbag designer Kristy Lash has come up with a new handbag design detail on a few of the handbags in her new handbag line, The Kristy Bag by CG made at Crabtree Gardens in Drums, PA. This detail is a cute little place to store your sunglasses or other eye wear while you are using the handbag.

Kristy decided to use the CG logo leather panel placed just high enough up from the bottom of the bag to hold her sunglasses. The detail is currently available on the “Kristy” tote bag and the “Angela” satchel. The handbag glass sling is a trend setting design feature that offers Kristy Bag owners the ability to hang their sunglasses or reading glasses on the outside of the bag for quick access. Read the previous post SHINE for more on this trend setting handbag and innovative designer Kristy Lash.

New “glass sling” design detail holds a pair of reading glasses on the front panel of the satchel. This American made leather bag is available from The Kristy Bag by CG a boutique handbag company from Crabtree Gardens in Drums, PA.

In addition to the eyeglass sling, Kristy designed other unique handbag details such as her “stitch in nine” and “north-south” placement of handbag handles into the “Kristy” tote bag and “Angela” satchel.

The Kristy Bag by CG is innovative and an up and coming handbag line. We are getting hits and visits from designers in the industry that are interested in what we’re up to.  We love creating new trends!

Shine

Sunshine! It is the main source of energy on Earth. Without it we wouldn’t exist. The rays of the sun are necessary for the survival of living things but some of those rays can also be damaging as well. I guess by now you’re wondering what this little science lesson has to do with our handbags. While reading on listen to this great song by Collective Soul (This is a link to audio-adjust volume on speakers) SHINE

You are most likely aware that as leather ages, it naturally darkens. This bronzing effect is lovingly referred to as “patina”. Sunlight causes oxidation which causes the leather to turn a darker color. Just as the skin on your body darkens in the sunlight and tans, so will any light exposure to leather. Actually, even if you never took your bag outside, it will still slowly darken because of the rays in light. Patina is highly sought after in the handbag world and many fine leather handbag owners actually put their bags outside to speed up the oxidation and get the patina they are after. If you are interested to see the effect sun has on veg tanned leather, which is what our bags are made of, you can visit this “timely” blog and see how a leather watch strap went from pale to brown.

So in essence, the sun is good to speed up patina on leather but it can be very unhealthy for the human body, especially the skin and eyes. That’s a good reason to buy another pair of sunglasses. Two important fashion accessories a woman should always be seen with are the classic leather handbag (like the “Kristy”or “Angela”) and a pair of head-turning shades. The sunglasses are not only there for eye protection from damaging UV sun rays, but they can also serve an ancillary purpose; to protect the wearer from being seen while checking out hot guys. But what do you do with them when you’re out and don’t need them on constantly but still need them from time to time?

While most eyeglass wearers safely tuck their shades away in a case if they are not being worn, there are some people who prefer to have them within easy reach. They are the people who value time and can’t be bothered fumbling around in their bags. Kristy Lash is one of those people.

The Kristy Bag by CG offers a “glass sling” on the “Kristy” tote and “Angela” satchel. This new handbag design feature is a trend-setting idea that gets many positive comments.

She also believes that a handbag should be used to its fullest potential. She doesn’t baby any of the handbags she owns, not even for a minute. Since she likes quick access to things, she has designed a detail that she’s dubbing a “glass sling” onto a few of the handbags in her new line. (That’s great news for people like me who also need reading glasses.) This trend-setting handbag feature gets positive comments from just about everyone who has it or sees it.  As well it should! It is a simple detail that adds even more personality to the bags created by Kristy for her handbag line The Kristy Bag by CG.

The “glass sling” is created by stitching both sides of the leather logo panel and allowing the top and bottom to remain open.

The glass sling is created with a square of leather which has the “CG” logo carved into it. The hand-cut and tooled letters are created by Dave Crabtree, the company’s leather artisan. The logo square is then hand-stitched on both sides onto the front of the bag leaving the top and bottom open which creates the space for glasses to hook. The length of leather holds down one arm of the glasses  which prevents them from swinging.  It is such a great little feature especially when going in and out of shops.Currently two of the handbags in Kristy’s line, “Kristy” tote and “Angela” satchel are designed with a glass sling on the front panel of the bag.

Since we are talking about effects of the sun today, I thought this tidbit about Kristy and Dave would be of interest. Both of them were born under the Sun Sign (Zodiac) Aquarius.  Aquarians are known to be visionaries. They are artistic and inventive. Just as Aquarius is the trailblazer of the zodiac, Kristy and Dave are trailblazing new directions in handbag design. The glass sling is another exclusive handbag design detail that affirms the innovative direction that The Kristy Bag by CG is headed.

So let the sun shine in! Some say we are living in the age of Aquarius! For those of you who remember, here’s one from the past-The Fifth Dimension Audio will play if you click the link- adjust your volume  Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In. As for Kristy and Dave, their future is so bright, they gotta wear shades!

Pedaling Her Way with Handbags

Kristy Lash at Crabtree Gardens holding three of her designs from The Kristy Bag by CG 2014 Handbag Collection

Kristy Lash holds three of her recent handbag designs from The Kristy Bag by CG 2014 Handbag Collection made at Crabtree Gardens.

Kristy Lash is a long-time handbag collector turned new handbag designer. She just can’t get enough of her passion which is handbags. That’s a good thing for her followers and clients because she is pedaling her way along the handbag design road. With the help of Dave Crabtree, her leather artisan business partner, Kristy is creating a little bit of excitement not only among those adult fashionistas who have a hankering for all kinds of designer bags and the income to support their habit, but also among those in-betweeners, the teens and young adults. This group of young and trendy designer-fashion lovers may not own a car yet, but they certainly appreciate having fine leather dangling from their arms.

Kristy Lash is a self-proclaimed "Girly-girl"who has a passion for handbags.

Kristy Lash is a handbag collector (addict) turned new handbag designer posing here with her designer handbag collection prior to starting her own handbag line, The Kristy Bag by CG made at Crabtree Gardens, LLC in Drums, PA.

Just like Kristy at a young age, these young fashion-conscious ladies appreciate accessories and the necessary importance of being in-style. Kristy is quoted in an interview as saying “I was a girly-girl from the beginning” as she delightedly referred back to her adolescence and her need to acquire more handbags. She, if anyone, can easily relate to these young women who are truly “Girly-girls”. What righteous parent could hold out on giving their girly-girl what she wants, or rather needs to keep her at a suitable peer-induced BFF fashion level? Parents must acquiesce to these adolescent desires. It would be a travesty should they not. The good news (yes, there is good news) is that The Kristy Bag by CG is there to help feed that need at no matter what age it should raise its ostentatious head.

“Ivanna” Wristlet is shown in its natural color and makes the perfect “Girly-Girl” accessory with a stitched XOX on the wrist strap. This is a “totally cute” bag!

The Kristy Bag by CG offers the “Ivanna” wristlet which is the perfect bag for those girls who want their first suede-lined leather designer bag. What could be better than dangling a bag on ones arm that was designed and handmade by a self-proclaimed “Girly-girl” turned trend-setting new handbag designer? At a price point around one hundred dollars, the pigskin-lined top grain cowhide leather wristlet is a reasonably priced designer leather accessory. It’s compact, easy to carry and it is “totally cute” (for real)! Let’s be honest, that’s cheap compared to some other things that these young women will want. The best part is that this is an accessory that is truly timeless. It will be fashionable years from now because it is made with top quality components that will last. Leather doesn’t go out of style. Leather, like leopard is always in fashion. Nature and patterns derived from nature never go out of style.

In addition to the “Natural” color, trendy new garden inspired colors that are offered by The Kristy Bag by CG are really young at heart. They are all natural permanent dyes that have subtle color variations when applied to leather. “Cucumber” is a bright green which looks like the actual skin of a cucumber, “Coveralls” is a striated blue shade resembling denim, “Spicy” boasts hot red that mimics a chili pepper, “Terracotta” is a subdued pale pinky-tan just like a nude shade of nail polish and “Deep” captures the look of spilled black cherry soda. These colors will be available on any of the current handbags in the Crabtree Gardens Handbag Line.

The Kristy Bag by CG 2015 handbag color “Coveralls” has striations of blue resembling the look of denim.

Eco-friendly dyes are hand applied to veg tanned “naked” leather resulting in opaque colors allowing the natural imperfections of the hide to show. Here “Coveralls” color is used on The Kristy Bag by CG Bagette.

Not only are the colors new for 2015 but in addition The Kristy Bag by CG is offering options on several colors of thread (thread colors on future post) for stitching. These bags can be completely custom designed in any color combination. Rumor has it that there will be a new optional Velcro closure designed into the 2015 wristlet as well. All of these options are available from this boutique American handbag company that uses eco-friendly dyes, vegetable tanned organic leather and hand-stitches all of their bags.

The Kristy Bag by CG is gaining ground with each bag that is made. Just as pedaling a bicycle gets easier with a steady momentum, so does making a presence in the fashion accessory world. The company may have started out in the tricycle stage but hopefully it won’t be too long before The Kristy Bag by CG is off and coasting along the handbag highway headed towards entering the Martha Stewart American Made Awards (http://www.marthastewart.com/1004449/about-american-made) contest.

A Stitch in “Nine” Saves Time

Trend setting handbag the Kristy bag by CG affordable handmade leather bag stitch in nine saves time

Stitching is an important or part of our handbag construction. Actually, the Kristy Bag by CG trend setting handbag design is based largely on the consideration that Kristy Lash and Dave Crabtree have given to all of the stitching. Hand-stitching is very laborious and it is something that makes their bags absolutely one-of-a-kind pieces of art. They are uniquely beautiful, hand-stitched pieces of panelized leather and the look cannot be duplicated by any machine. Machines just cannot offer the look of a hand-stitched piece of art.

Comparison of a machine-stitched handbag on the left and The Kristy Bag by CG with its hand-punched and hand-stitched look.

Comparison of a machine-stitched handbag on the left and The Kristy Bag by CG with its hand-punched and hand-stitched look.

The Kristy Bag by CG is a boutique handbag business and the handbags that are created here are meticulously created by hand. To us, stitches are beautiful! Our bags are created using a century old stitch called a “saddle-stitch”.  Two leather sewing needles are threaded onto each end of a heavy, twisted and waxed thread. The top needle holding its thread is then inserted down into one of the punched holes in a line that runs the length of the seam. Through that same hole, the bottom needle brings up the thread from underneath and now that bottom thread becomes the top thread and vice versa. This creates a continuous loop of thread along the leather spaces between the punched holes and holds the top panel and bottom panel of leather together. It is a time-consuming process that is extremely strong and it provides distinct results. When a machine-stitched bag is laid next to our hand-stitched bag the look is completely different.

The Kristy Bag by CG offers a saddle-stitched handle that has a double stitch every nine stitches for extra added stability.

A double row of stitches lines this handle on The Kristy Bag by CG

Frequently, stitches do come out of machine-made and hand-made designer handbags. This requires the handbag having to be shipped to a repair center for sometimes costly repairs. It can take months to have a fine leather (or plastic coated canvas) designer handbag returned after being sent away for repair. Often, when it is returned, either the damaged handles are replaced with new ones, which may be a different patina (compared to the already aging patina of the bag) or else the stitches that were broken will have been re-sewn (as straight as possible).

What causes stitches to wear out and break? Is it just a normal part of wear and tear on a handbag strap or handle? It happens to be a fact of nature that if enough pressure or continuous abrasion is applied to a surface, the surface will change. For instance: if a handbag is continually hung on a hook, the abrasion of the metal against the threads will cause them to weaken and break. The bending and movement of the strap or handle of a bag would put pressure on the stitches in places where they received the most stress such as the middle of a shoulder strap or on the middle of the handle/s where hands and fingers would rub.

“A Stitch in Nine Saves Time” handle balances on Kristy’s arm as she twirls around a leather heart to be used as a Spring 2015 accessory.

Dave and Kristy addressed these questions and planned a unique stitching detail for the handles and straps that not only reinforces them, it reinforces something that we are very passionate about. It reinforces the fact that we do what we do because there is a feeling of pride with each handbag that is created here. We chose to tweak the proverbial phrase “a stitch in time saves nine” and use it in a slightly different context. Our phrase “A stitch in nine saves time” refers to a double stitch every nine stitches. Our phrase brings awareness to the fact that we have taken measures to fortify the parts of handbags that receive the most use. We cannot guarantee that a stitch will never break or loosen but we have taken an extra initiative to extend the original life of the handles and straps by adding a bit of reinforcement. Our “stitch in nine” will provide an additional level of strength to the straps and handles. It does what the proverbial phrase  was meant to suggest. It is like a small protection plan for the hardest working parts of our bag.

A stitch in "nine" saves time and gives our discerning handbag clients a added level of quality.

A double stitch in “nine” saves time and gives our discerning handbag clients an added level of quality.

Our “stitch in nine ” also adds a very unique look to our bags. It’s our thing; it is our craftsmanship. We are setting a new trend in the handbag design industry. You will be able to identify a handbag made by The Kristy Bag by CG by the double stitches that are sewn every ninth stitch on handles and straps. This little extra measure of strength will give our clients an added measure of quality that they can see in their handbag investment. If for any reason there is a stitching failure, we will gladly handle the repair in our Carriage House Artist Studio located here at Crabtree Gardens.  We want to make things a bit easier for our clients even if they are just little things. After all, life is about enjoying the little things and “a stitch in nine saves time (and worries).”

What is a Handbag Trend?

Award winning Handbag the KristyBag by CG Kristy Lash trendsetter in handbag industry Kristy Lash Artist Crabtree Gardens handbag line

Let’s say that you’re in the market for a new handbag or even a totebag. If you are like most people an image search on the internet will give you some idea of what’s out in the handbag market right now. Maybe you are looking for a new trendy bag, something that’s just a bit different than the rest. You could search “trend setting tote bag”. After seeing KristyBag in the top few, you might continue to search and notice something pretty interesting. Among all of the beautiful styles, each one would have exactly the same thing in common. All of the handles on the bags were designed to attach parallel to the front and back of the handbag. I’ll call this handle placement “east to west”. What I mean is they are attached left to right on the bags which is a very common totebag design. Actually, it’s what we usually know a tote to have, two handles attached at four points (usually across the front and back) of the bag.

The KristyBag by CG is truly a trend setting handbag. I can say that with all of the confidence in the world because I was there at the very beginning of its design stage. I was so intrigued when Kristy’s first thought was about how she wanted her totebag to look when it was worn as an accessory. She made it a point to design the handle of the tote bag to attach to the “north” and then latch to the “south”. This means that the handle attaches from the center back of the bag and latches to the front. The single handle crosses the bag perpendicular. It is a genius idea!

Award winning and trend-setting Kristy totebag has a single handle that attaches perpendicular to the bag.

Award-winning and trend-setting Kristy totebag has a single handle that attaches perpendicular to the bag.

This well thought out design detail makes the KristyBag by CG very unique. This unique detail is a new style making the KristyBag a trendy tote bag. And most of all it makes Kristy Lash a truly new trendsetter in the handbag design world. According to Miriam Webster the word “trendsetter” is “someone who starts a new fashion, style, etc., or helps to make it popular”. Just as Crabtree Gardens has become a trend-setting garden by allowing nature to take its course, the KristyBag is setting new trends in the handbag industry.

The single handle on the “Kristy” totebag works with the nature of the body. When the arm is bent and the KristyBag is worn as an accessory, the placement direction (north to south) of the single handle allows full view of the beauty of the front of the bag without any twisting of handles. It allows the bag to rest in front of the body. The bag remains in the exact shape it was designed to be seen in. There is no twisting of handles on the forearm.

Kristy demonstrates the use of the shoulder strap and roominess of reaching your hand inside the front of the bag while still on the shoulder.

Kristy demonstrates the use of the shoulder strap and roominess while reaching her hand inside the front of the bag while still worn on the shoulder.

The “Kristy” tote bag can easily be carried to the side with one hand holding the single handle or it can be carried on the shoulder using the shoulder strap. This unique single handle design is the perfect way to add some beauty to a functional  totebag. You just scoop it up by the handle and you’re off. It’s easy to add things into the bag without even unlatching the handle.

How did Kristy come up with this trendy handbag idea? Kristy Lash is an artist in the truest sense. Her ability to draw the human body and depict its muscles, ligaments, skin and bones imbues her with a understanding of human aesthetics. Her anatomical representations for the medical industry are beautiful works of art. It makes sense that she is someone who can design a handbag based on how it feels and looks in relation to the body. Kristy shared a few of her earlier drawing with me for this post.

She designed the tote bag to be worn not only as a functional item, but also to be worn as a beautiful accessory while perched comfortably on the forearm. The Kristy Bag by CG is the perfect larger bag for people on the go who appreciate the aesthetic value of a handbag in addition to the accessibility of the tote.

Our new Crabtree Gardens Handbag Line, KristyBag by CG is really piquing the curiosity of some other handbag designers out there. Our website, this blog and our Facebook pages are getting many hits. We are elated that this handbag design detail is stirring up so much interest in the handbag industry. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it used in some 2015 and 2016 new handbag lines, and if so, you will know exactly by who and where this trend started. It started right here at Crabtree Gardens, with the artistic design knowledge and imagination of Kristy Lash and practical skills of leather artisan Dave Crabtree. Kristy and Dave are  the “ultimate handbag team” that are proud to say they have a trend-setting and an award winning handbag!
